Everybody has different reactions regarding certain events.
What if someone tries to snatch something from us, what would you do? Will you get a grip of your bag and try to fight with the snatcher? Or will you just let him get away with it and call for help?
And after what had happened, will you still trust that person?
It is very unusual for a person to trust someone who had recently tried to steal something from them. This act may seem foolish to others, but to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, it seemed right. Mrs. Jones was heading home from school that night when Roger tried to snatch her bag away from her. She was very strong that she could literally carry the boy to her house. I have never heard of such a situation when a woman takes a boy who tried to snatch her bag in.
We live in a world where actions are controlled by norms. Usually, when a person who has tried to snatch our bag is inside our house, we don't take our sight on that person. We watch every step he takes, every move he makes. But what Mrs. Jones did is different from the norms we follow. She didn't have any doubts about the fact that the boy who grabbed her bag was in her house. She seemed to put a lot of trust on Roger, considering the fact that she didn't lay her eyes on him every now and then. She treated him like a normal visitor and even offered food to eat. Others may be shocked to know what Mrs. Jones did, but it's her decision. She thinks the boy is harmless and I think what she did is very courteous thing to do. In a way, I admire her passion for children and giving her trust on them.
What would you do if you had been caught and the door is left wide open? Will you try to run through the open door? Or will you just stay from where you are?
It is unusual for a person not to try to escape even he had a chance. Others might have tried to escape from the first place, but what Roger did was different. Unlike others, he didn't escape instead he stayed. He didn't want to be mistrusted anymore so he stayed and I think that's the right thing to do. Everybody wants to be trusted, not to be mistrusted. He thinks that the thing he did is right and it all took him a lot guts to stay.
